All clubs remain focused on membership, with some prospective members reported at a recent Zone meeting, so hopeful for movement on that before the end of the Lions year.

Some clubs have had difficulties with Christmas activities where towing was required, but one club reported that a local business had kindly offered to help them by towing their sleigh to the static displays.

A few clubs (Melksham, Highworth, Chippenham) celebrate 50 years this year, being marked in different ways. Melksham town hall is going to be lit up with Lions colours to mark the occasion.

All clubs are having troubles with banking. CIO process still ongoing for Highworth. Devizes club suggested looking at Co-op Bank for a community account if desired.

The benefits of clubs talking to each other has been highlighted recently by one club advertising that they had a scooter surplus to requirements, which was needed in another clubs area so it was able to be passed on. This is a real advert for being part of a large organisation.

I have to echo some other zone chair comments in saying I find it difficult amongst my available hours to commit to fully serve all clubs. I've taken ad-hoc queries through the months since July and answered what has come up, but it remains a challenge.

Reason for members leaving

As reported in January, we have unfortunately had a number of members passing on to higher service in the last few months, and this is reflected in club losses at BoA, GMS and Westbury.  Other club shrinkage is down to membership costs and general cost of living considerations.

All clubs remain focussed on membership development and as a zone are supporting each other in membership drives.  Trowbridge Lions had an exceptional event in January which was very well attended by their community supporters and is looking promising for growth.

Are there any issues in any of the clubs or the Zone that a Cabinet officer might be able to assist with?

A concern was raised by a club that they were unaware that a Zone Chair produces reports regarding their club meeting activities.  This has been brought to the acting DGs attention and as I understand it Is being addressed a so that clubs will be better informed in the future as to the purpose of these reports.

Zone C - Mike Baker

Current Membership Lost New
Alton Lions Club (CIO) 32 0 5
Havant Lions Club (CIO) 14 5 2
Hayling Island Lions Club (CIO) 26 7 4
Meon Valley Lions Club (CIO) 23 2 1
Petersfield Lions Club (CIO) 22 7 1
Woolmer Forest Lions Club (CIO) 19 2 0
136 23 13

With originally 159 members and a loss rate of 14.4% and an increase rate of only 8% the reasons for loss were analysed and detailed in earlier reports except 'disillusioned with Lion' there were no surprises. However, we next need to look more closely at why and how people join and currently the two faster growing clubs appear to have significantly raised their profile by taking on new challenges and being much more engaged with their communities.

Not an easy thing for struggling clubs to replicate but to do it may be necessary to ship in physical and financial support to help raise profile.

2. Achievements to Date

I have held 3 zone meets with an agenda covering a) Membership, b) Marketing, c) Service and d) Governance with time for Cabinet notices etc and a zone social. Whilst each meeting has covered all topics one of the four main items has, in turn, been the main focus of attention. I developed presentations for membership and marketing, whilst service was a sharing of club service activities based on the seven objects of the CIO club (as all zone c are now CIO registered). It was an eye-opening experience for attendees and a great exchange of ideas, service, methods, experiences and opportunities.

3. Future Plans

The final zone meeting will have the same agenda with the main topic being governance which will concentrate on making sure clubs understand what the mandatory requirements are both in terms of LCI and CIO (UK Law). In going through the other agenda items, it should be possible to tease out each club's future plans and changes for the following year.

4. Other Comments

As a zone chair, I have found it quite difficult to cover all my Club, Zone and GLT duties with my available volunteer hours and have failed to make visits to each of the clubs. In particular there remains a club in the zone that has not been to a zone meet or made any sort of response to contact. I understand that it is on the radar of the cabinet team.

Zone D - Geoff Foan

1.  Membership

Within the Zone membership has essentially been static with all clubs showing membership figures that are similar to the those at the end of the last Lionistic year.

There has been some recruitment of new members, but this has generally been countered by loss of older members, whether called to higher service or from resignation. Of the four clubs, Loddon Valley has a membership of 20, Basingstoke 16, Abingdon 14 and Newbury 12.

One of the problems  associated with the recruitment of new members has been cited as the age profile of current membership. Because of this there has been a conscious effort within clubs to recruit younger members. Both Abingdon and Loddon Valley have managed to badge up a new, younger member recently.

2.  Activities

Two Zone meeting have taken place, the last a dinner meeting hosted by Newbury. The dinner meeting was reasonably well attended, but we have yet to reach the attendance levels of pre-COVID times.

Although there is no formal Zone project, there is interaction and support between the clubs: Loddon Valley have helped Newbury with their fireworks event, and Abingdon have supported the Loddon Valley Treacle Fair. It is becoming apparent that with current membership levels, events such as the fireworks and the Treacle Fair are getting to the stage that without extra support from the Zone and other nearby clubs and organisations, it would be difficult to man these events.  Loddon Valley are actively involved in the Zone  E Funfest, which they played a major role in setting up when part of that Zone.

All clubs appear to have well defined welfare programmes, providing support for those in need within all age groups.  Both Basingstoke and Loddon Valley have plans for further Prostate testing events.

3.  Conclusions

Although the Clubs all have active programmes that benefit their communities, it is becoming apparent that with reducing numbers and an increasing Club age profile, recruitment of new, younger members must be seen as a priority. Most clubs will have seen some effect on numbers following the COVID pandemic, a period when normal club activities were difficult. All of the clubs have managed to continue with their welfare and fundraising activities, and are looking to recruit new members.

Zone E - Lisa Rust

I have visited all of my Clubs, I have been made to feel most welcome. I hold quarterly well attended Zone meetings where active discussion is encouraged. We are involved in many Zone projects. I have reinstated the Zone Bone competition in an attempt to build friendship and get to know better those we work on Zone projects with.

The Bra Recycling Bin at the Community Store  continues to be we'll supported, DPD have made 3 large collections so far.

All Clubs have been instrumental in supporting the Community Store, Christmas food parcels and gifts and supported with general running funds and Lion power.

All clubs have taken on a role to raise funds for the Zone FunFest event, and all clubs are on the FunFest Committee.

The IT project continues to support those in need, they are looking for more laptops.

ROAR 23 saw 14 local schools be supported across the Zone.  Cherrywood school won, they were supported by Farnborough Lions. ROAR 24 looks t be just as successful.

FLEET Lions and FLOGS branch club –  46

Fleet and Flogs have supported various individual grants, held a well-attended PSA event, Beerfest, Fireworks, Carol Concert, and trialled an Advent Calendar multi club project. They have just badged up 2 new members. They will be celebrating their 50th Charter later this month.

ALDERSHOT branch club – 10 members

Aldershot Lions President, Ian, sadly passed to Higher Service last month. The Club are so active in their community. They have held various Quiz nights and Chocolate Tombolas, they regularly support the Community Grub Hub and Fleet Lions events. They were also involved in the Advent Calendar project. They have just badged up a new member.

FARNBOROUGH Lions – 10 members

Farnborough have held Quiz nights, collected Christmas parcels, won ROAR 23. They ran their first very successful PSA event. and regularly promote through BRadio. They hope to be able to continue to run their Classic Car rally.

HART Lions – 15 members

Further new members are anticipated before the end of the Lion year.

Burnham Lions are a potential concern as their President relocated to Bolton at the end of January and a long standing and active member Marilyn Rolfe was unexpectedly called to higher service in late January. Positively, they had 3 guests at their January Club meeting.

Three Zone meetings have been held so far this year, each hosted by a different Club, with the 4th meeting scheduled for 22nd May (host Club and venue TBC). All 8 Clubs have generally been represented, with an average attendance of 22 members. Meetings have included presentations about Parkinson's UK (Reading branch), Thames Valley Adventure playground, and most recently ROAR 2024. These meetings have helped general communications between Clubs and facilitated the sharing of ideas and information.

I hope that we will also have a Zone social event – a skittles evening – before year end.

All clubs have been active in fundraising, service and social activities as their membership numbers allow. Clubs have also collaborated well, supporting one another's events where a greater number of helpers has been required.

I have been able to attend and/or help at a variety of Club events including Burnham's Classic Car Show and Christmas Market, Maidenhead's 50th Charter Dinner and Swimarathon, Reading's PSA event and skittles evening, Windsor's Awards evening, and Woodley and Earley's Santa Sleigh and skittles evening. Visits to Club meetings are scheduled to take place over the next 3 months.

Maidenhead Lions celebrated their 50 year anniversary with a Dinner last September, and Wokingham Lions will celebrate their 50 year anniversary in May and June with a couple of special events.

Are there any issues in any of the clubs or the Zone that a Cabinet officer might be able to assist with? No

I visited all clubs in the Zone at least once with some clubs having two visits so far for this Lionistic year and intend to complete a second visit to the rest after my holiday. Sadly Bournemouth & Christchurch are in the process of closing down due to various reasons not least of which is the age of their members.

In October the Zone project was a beach clean at Studland which we managed to get into the Sentinel.

Wareham is in the process of inducting a lady into the club (the first one) with possibly more in the pipeline.

I intend to stand again for the position of Zone Chair in the coming year

I also had the honour and privilege to present a 50 year service badge to one of the members of New Milton a fantastic achievement

Zone H - Christine Asquith

Current Lost New
Fareham Lions 8 4 1
Swanwick Lions 12 0 1
Crofton Lions 17 0 2
Eastleigh Lions 17 3 0
Romsey and Waterside Lions 12 0 2

Frances and myself have visited all the Clubs in Zone H and finding them working very hard within their Community. All the Clubs are very pro-active, delivering MIAB, collecting spectacles and supporting events that are taking place.

All the Clubs have Annual Events that they organise or contribute to which includes Christmas Sleighs, Duck Races, Fayres and Parties and Romsey and Waterside also run a monthly book stall which is very good for raising the awareness of Lions Clubs.

Despite Membership being a big issue the Clubs are very organised in ensuring that the Events and activities take place with great success. All Clubs are working hard to gain more Members.

I asked for ideas for a Social Evening and Bowling was suggested. However this had to be cancelled due to lack of support so I I feel the next way forward to get the Clubs together is to organise a Zoom meeting and build up from there. On Reflection I feel that this should have taken place at the start of the Lionistic Year.

I have had a pallet of MIAB's delivered for distribution within the Zone.

Zone I - Paul Allaway

Due to travel restrictions and the cost of travel I have yet to visit the Clubs in the Zone but am hoping to do visit the Isle Wight in April.

However, I have held a couple of Zoom meetings with most of the Clubs attending.

There have been difficulties within the Isle of Wight as unfortunately due to ill health a few other issues we lost Ventnor but Sandown and Shanklin did absorb one member and the Ventnor Club assets.

Current membership in the Zone is 75 which overall is down 1 on last year which is mainly due to members passing on to higher service.

Current Lost New
Guernsey 12 0 3
Jersey 32 3 0
Newport and Cowes (Branch) 10 1 0
Ryde 12 1 0
Sandown & Shanklin 9 0 1

Above figures based on Club Health assessment through January 2024.

All Clubs continue to Serve in their communities and take part in Spectrek, Message in a bottle etc and raise funds through several events including Swimarathon attendance at village fairs, muddy fun runs and shows.

Clubs are also working together with other Charities such as Round Table, local hospices etc. in putting on events or helping at the Charities organised event.

Together with the DG team we are hoping to travel to Isle of Wight in early April to assist the Island Clubs in a recruitment drive and promote awareness of Lions.
